This year for cake class, I thought I would take things to the next level and make all my cakes from scratch. Last time, I did every cake out of a box...predictable and quick. I do make cakes occasionally from scratch, but I can't deny the convenience of box mixes!
For my cake for this weeks class, I decided to make Bakerella's Red Velvet cake. Our teacher asked us to icing it with a chocolate top so it would resemble a drum.
I spent most of my Sunday making my cake, making tons of icing for this weeks cake and next week's cake, and then icing the cake in prepartion for class. Basically I was working the time management skills that I don't usually have...I was feeling pretty great that I had everything prepared a day ahead of time because I am definately a procrasitnator and generally wait for a couple hours before class to begin my "masterpiece" (and I use that term in jest.)
So imagine my surprise, when my cousin and I are sitting in the parking lot at cake class talking about our cakes, and I realize that ....
I FORGOT MY CAKE!!!!
How do you forget to take your cake that you slaved over to cake class????
I had ALL my supplies and icing....but no cake!!!!
Luckily I was able to run back home and get it, and the class was nice enough to sit and chat while I was gone so I didn't miss a thing!!
So what did I learn from all this????
That I do much better waiting to the last minute!!! (-:
So I present to you the "Drum" cake...aka the crazy clown cake.
I have to say when I saw just the "drum" cake that my teacher made, I wasn't seeing the whole picture. She hadn't added the clowns yet so I was thinking it was a pretty unimpressive project albeit a great cake for practicing.
But the clowns definitely make the cake...and they are so easy to make.
The clowns are made from 4 miniuature marshmallows on a toothpick, piped in a two tone icing. Obviously the heads are plastic picks....The drum is actually a marshmallow.
And just for the record, it is perfectly acceptable in the world of cake decorating for clowns to have large, funky feet...actually it is preferred. (-;
And here is my daughter patiently waiting for me to finish up pictures so she can dig in.
I asked her what her favorite part of today was defininately thinking she would tell me playing with her cousin while I was at cake class, but she said the best thing today was eating some of my cake. So I guess we can call it a winner no matter how it looks!
And this is my elusive son giving it a thumbs up. He hasn't gotten any blog time lately because he manages to avoid me and the camera, but today he allowed me to take a picture so I am definately posting it!
And this picture explains why the cake was not level in the least bit. I thought I had done a great job leveling it, and that might have been true...it was the 2 inches of frosting heaped in the middle that made it unlevel.
So tonight was a good night, learned some new things and had a great time with new and old friends.
Can't wait till next week!

You did a great job!
The cake looks GREAT!! I tried to make a Zoe (from Sesame Street) cake for H's 2nd birthday. Uuuummmm....yeah--let's just say that I got frustrated so my husband had to finish it.
I love Bakerella! That cake looks yummy! Taking a cake class is on my list of crafty-want-tos.
