Hair Scrungie 101

I have long hair and am constantly searching for my ever decreasing supply of hair scrunchies. As a teenager, I used to make them with my grandmom from time to time so after seeing a teen selling them at a yardsale this weekend, I figured I would put my sewing skills to good use.

A couple cast off t-shirts and 97 cent elastic from Walmart

Since we no longer have fabric department at our beloved local Walmart, I decided to upcycle. I used a few of my son's t-shirts that he no longer fits into...most had stains on the front so I just used the back. I got between 3-4 scrungies per shirt back.

I cut the shirt into strips of 20 inches long and 4-5 inches wide. I didn't worry about perfection so my lines were a little off. I folded them in half longways, and sewed the edges together lengthwise. Then I turned the material so it was right side in, some people use a pencil to help with this.

I took between 5-6 inches of elastic and weaved it through the inside, you can do whatever length you want depending on the thickness of your hair and how much expansion you will need. I tied the elastic in a knot after weaving it through. Then you finish sew the two ends together, and they should look something like this.

Pretty easy and very forgiving of mistakes. A perfect project to do with first time sewers. I will surely be doing this during the summer with my gang of older babysitting kids.

I was actually going to cut off my hair for the summer and donate it to locks of love, but I decided to keep it awhile longer...just a little while. (-:
